Museums in Egypt

Egypt is a transcontinental country spanning the northeast corner of Africa and southwest Asia by a land bridge formed by the Sinai Peninsula.

Egypt emerged as one of the world’s first nation-states in the tenth millennium BC. Ancient Egypt saw some of the earliest writing, agriculture, urbanization, organized religion, and central government.

Egypt’s long and rich cultural heritage ensures that it has many museums of interest.

Cairo Museums

Cairo is the capital and largest city of Egypt, and the famous Giza pyramid complex and the ancient city of Memphis are located in its geographical area.

Situated near the Nile Delta, modern Cairo was founded in 969 CE, but the present-day city includes ancient national capitals whose remnants are visible in parts of Old Cairo.

Cairo has long been a center of the region’s political and cultural life and is titled “the city of a thousand minarets” for its preponderance of Islamic architecture.

Cairo has the oldest and largest film and music industries in the Arab world and the world’s second-oldest institution of higher learning, Al-Azhar University.

Egyptian Museum

The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, known commonly as the Egyptian Museum, holds an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities.

The museum’s collection contains over 120,000 items and is one of the largest museums in the region.
