Museums in Mexico City

Mexico City, or the City of Mexico, is the capital and largest city of Mexico. The Greater Mexico City population is over 21 million people, making it the largest metropolitan area in the Western Hemisphere and the largest Spanish-speaking city in the world.

Mexico’s capital is the oldest capital city in the Americas and one of the earliest founded by Native Americans. The city was initially built on an island of Lake Texcoco by the Aztecs in 1325 as Tenochtitlan. Following the Spanish conquest, it was redesigned and rebuilt to Spanish tastes and served as the political, administrative, and financial center of a significant part of the Spanish colonial empire. Following independence from Spain, it has developed as the vibrant capital of Mexico.
