Masterpieces of the Shanghai Museum

Shanghai Museum Night

The Shanghai Museum building inaugurated in 1996 is designed in the shape of an ancient bronze cooking vessel called a ding. The building has a round top and a square base, symbolising the ancient Chinese perception of the world as “round sky, square earth.

Among the many historical, cultural and specimen objects in the Shanghai Museum the following are highlights:

  • You with zigzag thunder pattern, early Zhou Dynasty
  • Ruyao porcelain wares from the Northern Song Dynasty
  • Bianzhong of Marquis Su of Jin, from Western Zhou
  • Dake Ding, from late Western Zhou
