Brussels is a region of Belgium comprising 19 municipalities, including the City of Brussels, which is the capital of Belgium. Brussels is the most densely populated and wealthiest region in Belgium.
Brussels grew from a small rural settlement on the river Senne to become an essential city-region in Europe.
Since the end of the Second World War, it has been an important center for international politics and the home of many international organizations, politicians, diplomats and civil servants.
Brussels is the de facto capital of the European Union, and its name is sometimes used as a figure of speech to describe the EU and its institutions. Brussels is a hub for rail, road and air traffic and headquarters of NATO.
Historically Dutch-speaking, Brussels saw a language shift to French from the late 19th century. French is now the de facto primary language, with over 90% of the population speaking French. Nearly a third of the population speaks English.
The main attractions include its historic Grand Place and the Museums of Art and History.
