Charlotte is one of the country’s fastest-growing metro areas and home to the corporate headquarters of several leading financial institutions making it the second-largest banking center in the United States.

The Catawba Native Americans were first recorded around 1567 in Spanish records. By 1759, half the Catawba tribe had died from smallpox, and by 1826 their total population had dropped to about 100.

The area that is now Charlotte was settled by people of European descent around 1755. The city of Charlotte was developed first by a wave of migration of Scots-Irish Presbyterians, then by German immigrants also settled the area before the American Revolutionary War.

Nicknamed the “Queen City,” Charlotte was named in honor of German princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who had become the Queen Consort of Great Britain and Ireland in 1761.

Today among Charlotte’s many notable attractions, some of the most popular museums include the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, Carolinas Aviation Museum, and Charlotte Nature Museum in Freedom Park.
