Museums in Rhode Island – Virtual Tour

Rhode Island is a state that takes its name from one of its many islands, however, most of the state is located on the mainland. The state borders with Connecticut, Massachusetts, and the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1776, the Colony of Rhode Island was the first of the Thirteen Colonies to renounce its allegiance to the British Crown. However, it then boycotted the 1787 convention, which drew up the United States Constitution and was the last of the original 13 states to sign.

During the American Civil War, Rhode Island was the first Union state to send troops in response to President Lincoln’s request for help from the states. In 1866, Rhode Island abolished racial segregation in its public schools.

Rhode Island’s nickname is “The Ocean State,” a reference its many bays and inlets that amount to a significant proportion of its total area. Providence is the state capital and largest city in Rhode Island.

The years that following the Civil War were a time of prosperity and affluence. Rhode Island became a center of the Gilded Age and provided summer homes to many of America’s most prominent industrialists.

This was a time of growth in textile mills and manufacturing, which brought immigrants to fill those jobs, bringing growth and urbanization.

Thousands of French-Canadian, Italian, Irish, and Portuguese immigrants arrived to fill jobs in the textile and manufacturing mills in the major centers of Rhode Island.
