Museums in Sacramento, California – Virtual Tour

Sacramento is the capital of California, located at the junction of the Sacramento River and the American River in Sacramento Valley.

Before the arrival of the Spanish, the area was inhabited by the Nisenan, Maidu, and other indigenous peoples of California. The Spanish surveyed and named the Rio del Santísimo Sacramento (Sacramento River) in 1808.

Following the American Conquest of California, the City of Sacramento was incorporated in 1850.

During the California Gold Rush, Sacramento became a major commercial center, serving as the terminus for the Pony Express and the First Transcontinental Railroad.

Sacramento is one of the fastest-growing major cities in California, becoming a financial center, an important center for the California healthcare industry, and a central educational hub.

Sacramento has also become a notable tourist destination as the site of the California Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, the California State Railroad Museum, the California Hall of Fame, the California State Capitol Museum, and the Old Sacramento State Historic Park.
